With over 50 years of design experience, Toshiyuki Kita created NUPRI, a representation of his thoughts on the refined sense of beauty found in Hokkaido, Japan.
He chose the name “nupri,” meaning “mountain” in the language of the Ainu (Hokkaido’s Indigenous people). Made using Hokkaido-grown Japanese Oak, NUPRI expresses the connection between humans and nature. A flowing line of solid wood extends from the back to the arms and down to the legs. The slender column connecting the back to the stretcher creates a sense of solemn tension, giving the chair a look of both strength and delicacy. The chair functions as both a beautiful work of art as well as a functional, sturdy seat for everyday use.
